A lot of people wonder what the health risks are with smoking moldy weed. Let me start by saying that certain kinds of mold are present in almost everything found in nature. Usually people are not affected by these species, but the potential for other species of mold in cannabis is definitely there.

Causes Of Mold In Weed

There are a few ways weed can become moldy. Normally it is caused by having too much moisture in an airtight environment. If a grower or dealer adds water to inflate the weight of the weed, you run a higher risk of mold. Improper or inadequate drying can also produce mold. The weed really needs to be dried out to the proper extent before it can be packaged or put into an airtight environment.

The user can also do things to create mold. A lot of people add orange peels to their bag to help keep their weed fresh. You have to be very careful as the orange peel can easily become moldy itself. You always have to be careful of how you store your weed. I read about one guy who actually put his stash in a water bottle that had some water left in it. The weed got moldy and he smoked it. Of course smoking moldy weed is not pleasant and he got scared.

Effects Of Smoking Moldy Weed

Smoking moldy weed is not really a great idea. Some people will not be effected by it at all while others will see respiratory problems or symptoms similar to the flu. Obviously people with poor health or immune systems will be more prone to problems. Moldy weed will also taste pretty bad when smoking it. However, smoking moldy weed is a bit safer than eating it.

Treating Moldy Weed

If you want to try to kill off the mold, you can bake it in the oven at 300° F for about 15 minutes. This will probably not kill all the mold and there will really be no way for you to tell if it has. My best advice would be to throw any moldy marijuana in the trash. If it was your dealer’s fault, maybe you can get compensated, but who knows. If you’re lucky enough to be living in an area where you can legally buy weed, you have a lot less to worry about.
